What is a Schulte Grid?
The Schulte Grid (or Schulte Table) is a deceptively simple 5×5 matrix containing the numbers 1 through 25 in random order. The task: find and tap numbers in ascending sequence as quickly as possible. What starts as a simple counting exercise becomes a powerful tool for training visual scanning, peripheral awareness, and processing speed.
History and origins
Developed by German psychiatrist Walter Schulte in the 1960s, the grid was originally used to study and train attention in psychiatric patients. It later gained popularity in speed reading programs across Russia and Eastern Europe, and today is used by athletes, pilots, and chess players for visual attention training.
