What is a reaction time test?
A reaction time test measures how long it takes you to respond to a stimulus — in this case, a coloured panel changing from dark to green. It is one of the oldest measurements in experimental psychology and one of the few that maps closely to real-world performance in gaming, driving and sport.
The result is expressed in milliseconds (ms). There are 1,000 ms in a second, so a score of 250 ms means a quarter of a second between the cue appearing and your input registering. Lower is better.
It is worth separating two things people usually mean by the term. A simple reaction time test — which this is — has one stimulus and one response. A choice reaction time test makes you pick between options, and always produces slower scores because of the extra decision step.
What is a good reaction time?

Device latency is real: a wireless mouse, a 60 Hz monitor and a busy browser can each add 10–30 ms. Treat differences of under 20 ms between two of your own tests as noise.

Average reaction time by age
Reaction time is not a single number for everyone — it drifts steadily upward with age. Comparing yourself to the whole population is unfair at both ends of that curve, which is why this test lets you pick your age group after you finish.

How this test measures you
Most online reaction tests time your click, which fires when you release the mouse button. That folds your own finger-lift time into the result and makes every score look slower than it is. This test times the moment you press down.
- 5 trials, median score. A single distracted attempt would drag an average badly, so the result you see is the middle value of your valid trials.
- Randomised delay. The green panel appears after an unpredictable pause, so you cannot pre-plan your click and fake a fast time.
- False starts are voided. Clicking early does not bank a fast score — the attempt simply repeats.
How to improve your reaction time
Roughly in order of how much they actually move the number:
- 1.Sleep. Reaction time is one of the first things to degrade under sleep debt — a single short night can add 20–40 ms.
- 2.Cut the hardware latency. A wired mouse, a 120 Hz+ display and fewer background tabs can be worth more than weeks of training.
- 3.Reduce alcohol and heavy late meals. Both slow processing speed measurably for hours afterwards.
- 4.Train with unpredictable stimuli, not memorised sequences. Tracking and visual-search drills generalise; pure number-memorisation does not.
- 5.Re-test consistently. Same device, same time of day, when rested — otherwise you are measuring your environment, not yourself.

How does this reaction time test work?
Five trials. Each one waits for a randomised pause, then the panel turns green and you click as fast as you can. Your result is the median of your valid trials. Timing starts the instant you press down rather than when you release, so your own finger-lift time is not counted against you.
Is this reaction time test free?
Yes. It is completely free, needs no signup and no email address, and your result appears on screen immediately. Nothing is behind a paywall.
How accurate is my result?
The measurement itself resolves to the millisecond, but it necessarily includes your hardware's delay. A 60 Hz display, a wireless mouse and busy background tabs together commonly add 20–40 ms, so treat your number as a score for this particular setup rather than an absolute property of your nervous system. Test on the same device when you want to compare across sessions.
Why did my early click not count?
Clicking before the panel turns green is anticipation, not reaction, and scoring it would make every result meaningless. A false start voids that attempt and repeats the same trial, so neither your score nor your trial count is affected.
Do I have to give my age?
No. Age is optional and only changes which reference group your percentile is calculated against. Skip it and you are compared against adults of all ages.
Can I improve my reaction time?
